Articles

An interesting article crossed my desk recently concerning Diabetes in the U.S. The article stated Public Health Officials were increasingly alarmed by the growing pace of Type II Diabetes to the point they were calling it a “Virtual Epidemic”. Now to give you some numbers and facts to back up this statement; an estimated 21 million Americans have diabetes with another 41 million having pre-diabetic blood sugar disorders, putting them in a high risk category for developing diabetes in the near future. The American Diabetic Association estimates the cost of diabetes including lost work and disability payments to be at least $132 billion per year. One endocrinologist in New York was quoted to project our future work force as “Fat, one legged, & blind-a diminution of able bodied workers at every level”.

Is our profit driven medical system responsible or do we look towards our educational system and their lack of knowledge in presenting and applying healthy eating habits to our children. In the long run we all have to take part of the blame. Of course that means we then can be part of the cure.

We discuss the effects of insulin resistant health associated problems at Natural Medicine Clinic and offer dietary choices that are looked upon as being radical, fanatical and sometime contrary to the AMA’s food pyramid. I can only ask you to consider the statistics and come to your own conclusion as to what role you feel grain carbohydrates, excessive fruit intake and of course soda and candy play in your families healthy lifestyle. Ask yourself these questions:
1) Are my children or other family members sick more than one or twice per year?
2) Are they at a weight management level that you would consider lean and trim with enough energy to complete daily tasks?
3) Is their concentration leave above average or do they complain about forgetfulness with a lack of attention to detail?
4) Are they getting enough exercise weekly? New data suggests exercising 5 days per week for 30-60 minutes is which an individual breaks a good sweat-with 1-3 days of additional weight training included.

If you have not answered yes to all four questions you may want to seriously consider some type of lifestyle change for the family. Education is your number one defense against a world that will sell you corporate food and pocket your good health in their savings account. Please choose wisely.
