This being the Fourth of July weekend reminds me of how similar
the fireworks are to our biochemicals. Most of you know my
background is in the arena of Neurotransmitters, Neuropeptides,
biochemicals and hormones. Which ever name you wish to call
them, they are messengers of information and energy, all set in
motion by our emotions. When you watch the fireworks this
weekend, at the beginning you’ll notice them going off one at a
time, very systematic, with each one having a certain elegance
and beauty. You will probably join in with a big “Ah” as you
feel a sense of pleasure and harmony with the person you are
viewing these fireworks with.
When
we are in balance, this is how our biochemistry behaves and
regulates the actions of our autonomic nervous system to relax.
When the finally comes, there are fireworks going off everywhere
in streams of chaos. Our heart races, we get fidgety, our
breath becomes shallow and we hold our partners hand tightly.
We are momentarily in fight or flight. So when our emotions get
out of control, our chemistry becomes chaotic, sending
incomplete messages everywhere with no rhythm or reason. If
this continues over a long period of time, those chemical
messages will not communicate properly and we will get sick.
Choose wisely in your actions and reactions so that every day
does not feel like the Fourth of July Grand Finale.
