I hope your summer was relaxing and filled with fun
activities. Now that fall is around the corner, it’s time to
focus in on our health. Some of you may have heard about the new
FDA law requiring almond pasteurization. Starting in September
of 2007, raw almonds available in the U.S.A. will no longer be
“truly raw” due to a mandate passed by the USDA, FDA and
California Almond Board. From now on, all almonds (even organic)
will have to be pasteurized, though they will still be labeled
as raw almonds.
Why are they going to such trouble? There were 2 isolated
outbreaks of salmonella a few years ago that were in conjunction
with almond farms. For this, we will now be subjected to three
types of pasteurization:
1. Propylene Oxide (PPO) an insecticide fumigation process that
is listed as a carcinogen
2. High Heat (will degrade the nuts and enzyme action)
3. Steam (will devalue nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants)
I ask that you join in and petition against this desecration of
natural foods. Go to www.livingnuts.com and click on the almond
pasteurization petition link. Let’s be proactive when it comes
to our rights as citizens to protect our families food choices!
